Job Title: Boat Sander
Department: Assembly (Finish & Detailing)
Performs preparation and sanding techniques in the build/repair of boats and boat parts, both interior and exterior. Has learned sanding techniques, use of materials and tools, to sand materials to the appropriate thickness. Able to meet schedule and budget and charge out parts and materials. Work is performed independently. May potentially train and lead small work team.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Prepares wood, metal, fiberglass, or other surfaces for painting.
- Tape or otherwise protect surrounding surfaces, such as decks, hardware, and windows during work process.
- Full knowledge of the requirements for prepping and sanding the products utilizing sanding apparatuses and appropriate grit paper to obtain proper finish.
- Cleans, sands, and smooth surfaces, using appropriate tools, such as scrapers, sandpaper, steel wool, or chemicals.
- May perform small repairs to surfaces to be painted using appropriate materials and tools.
- Sets up and dismantles staging and ventilation protection following OSHA staging guidelines.
- Able to work cooperatively with other department personnel.
- Follow defined instructions and procedures in performance of tasks.
- Follow prescribed safety rules and regulations and maintain safe, clean work area.
- Perform other related duties as necessary and assigned.
Minimum Skill Requirements:
- Must be able to read, write, and be able to add/subtract whole numbers and fractions.
- High school diploma or GED preferred.
- Knowledge and operation of basic hand and power tools; sandpapers, tapes, grinders, surface sanders, DA and Block sanders, polishers, and buffers.
- Two (2) to three (3) years painting experience, preferably in boat building and/or boat repair.
- Ability to effectively use templates and overlays.
- Experience in a similar role helpful.
- Must be able to wear a full body Tyvek suit and respirator per OSHA standards.
Environmental Conditions:
Exposed to dust, fumes, and some outside weather conditions. May be exposed to acetone, resin, fiberglass, putties, glues, cleaners.
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Requirements:
Safety Glasses. Closed-toed, closed-heeled rubber soled footwear. Respirator and full Tyvek suit.
